Tuesday, 1st of Spring, we departed Metung and headed for Genoa via the scenic route following the Tambo River up to Bruthen then across to Nowa Nowa on the Bruthen-Buchan Rd. Was much more scenic and quiet than the Hwy and this is a pic looking over the the Tambo River. Just stopped in the middle of the road, no traffic, took pic and on our way, couldn’t do that on the Hwy 😉 :
Back on the Princes Hwy stopped for morning tea at a Rest Stop on Hospital Creek, Tostaree and found a section of the East Gippsland Rail Trail that goes from Bairnsdale to Orbost. Here are the pics:
- Rest Area @ Hospital Creek, Tostaree
- Hospital Creek, Tostaree, Hwy sign
- Bridge across Princes Hwy @ Hospital Creek, Tostaree
- The old rail bridge was destroyed in 2011 by a bush fire. It was between the current bridge and the small causeway in next pic.

If you do stop, or are travelling through Genoa, the Genoa Falls is about 6km south on Hwy and is well worth a visit. Is a tad hard to find and easier to use these GPS Co-ords 37°28’52.0″S 149°33’16.5″E or this Google Map shows the route from the Genoa Wayside Rest Area to the falls. And a pic of the Falls:

Genoa Falls
We stayed at the Genoa Wayside Rest Area for 2 nights and made our way to home at Tathra on Thursday 3rd Sept.
Here is a video of the Genoa Wayside Rest Area and for more info on Genoa click HERE.
The final morning was quite chilly, but warm in van due to the miracle of the Diesel Heater as is attested to in these pics:
- A freezing minus 0.4 outside and a comfy 18.8 inside
- The freezing outdoors at Genoa – who was the bloody silly dill taking that pic?
And a closing pic from Genoa just up the road from the Rest Area:
Well that’s it for another Wallaby Wander.
Next trip is ……. who knows? tomorrow? next year?
Will let you know when we do 😉
Thanks for reading.
