29/04/2013 Binnaway Free Camp, NSW

Ended up in Binnaway, only 50km from Mandooran, our last stay. Gerri went to Coonabarabran for shopping and a laundromat.

As we left Mandooran we picked up some fresh tomatoes from a roadside stall with scales & an honesty box. So now nice home grown tomatoes to cherish. Here is pic.

On the way we stopped for morning tea and there were “lovely” Prickly Pear everywhere, looks nice but is a weed. See pic below.

We are camped at the Binnaway Pumphouse Camping Ground, a freecamp in town, and they have showers ($2/5min) that Gerri used and Kym had a shower by the van as the paid showers did not have a free cold water option. Power is also available, $2/3hrs, which we do not need. See a short Video of Pumphouse Camping Ground.

Had lamb casserole for dinner (and very nice it was too) that Gerri cooked and used some red wine. In the cooking process the rising vapours set off our new Gas Alarm. We figured it was the evaporating alcohol, that is a combustible gas, that set the alarm off …… who would have thought!

May stay here another day, will decide tomorrow.
Well, we stayed today, Tuesday 30/04/2013, and will head off tomorrow.

Today we wandered around town, Gerri did MORE washing (not sure where it all comes from), Kym did a repair to the annex roof that was starting to rip and fixed with contact cement and some seatbelt webbing found on road whilst riding. Also picked up a nice okky strap on that ride. Also moved a fire extinguisher to make way for a shoe hanger.

Below is a pic of the Old Pumphouse that we presume would have supplied water early in Binnaway’s History. The area is now a dedicated Freecamp that encourages travellers, like us, to stay and so spend our money in town, which we did.

Also of interest is the mobile phone services again. We have good Virgin 3G (Optus) internet but NO Telstra 3G phone, continuing the no Telstra in the bush trend. On our walk found this tower with an Optus Fibre Cable right next to it.

Tomorrow we are on our way and we believe we are heading to Pilliga Artesian Bore Baths for a warm bath. The link is a Google Map of our planned route.  Will probably do a one nighter along the road as there are a few things on the way, like Warrumbungles, and Gerri has to go through Gulargambone because she likes the sound of the name and there may be a family connection there. There are a couple of roadside freecamps just out of Gulargambone.

As we were leaving Binnaway overhead a couple of people talking, the first person said “Where’s you bin?”, the other person said “I’s binnaway”. 🙂

26/04/2013 Mendooran Free Camp, NSW

Arrived here at Mendooran yesterday 26/04/2013.  Very nice free camp near river and only 500mt walk into town, albeit quite small.
Again (as usual), Virgin (Optus) 3G and NO Telstra 3G. There is a pattern developing here. Good thing we are not relying on Telstra.

Here is a pic of our current home site:

We do have a few neighbours, all quite friendly, as with all free camps.

Today we just potted around, went into town to support the local economy, had a great chat with the chap manning the Co-op Craft Shop and we solved all the problems with todays youth and concluded the issues were very complex & multi-faceted to pin down any one cause. I am quite sure our parents had similar conversations when we were the youth.

Here are a few murals featured around the town, quite impressive:

And here is the sunset today, red sky at night, shepherds delight, bodes well for tomorrow:

Staying here tomorrow, 28/04/2013,  and then we will see.

Sunday is a day of rest, so we just chatted and read.
Kym went for an early morning ride here:

and became reaquainted with Cat Heads (3 thorn seeds that stick into bike tyres) and blessed the Slime in the tyres meaning also 5 re-inflates instead of 5 puncture repairs. See pics below of the ride scenery making the Cat Heads worthwhile.
Gerri did some washing as the sun was shining and we had plenty of power for the Inverter to run the magic spinner.

Moving on today, whereabouts yet to be determined, checking out Binnaway & shopping/laundry in Coonabarabran.

Next posting will determine where we are ………………

24/04/2013 Cumnock Show Ground

Travelled from Carcoar Dam to Cumnock, will stay here for a few days and shock/horror we are paying $10/night to stay in local Showground but it does have water, hot showers and 240v power so we decided to splurge.

On the way we stopped at Millthorpe, bought a few things (Caravan mags & local Anzac bickies) and had morning tea at The Old Mill Cafe, great selection of cakes. Millthorpe Railway Station, below, is now converted into tourist wine outlets.

We were heading for Yeoval but when we came into Cumnock it was 3.30pm and the hot showers decided it. Also have good Virgin (Optus 3G) for internet. No Telstra 3G for phones, they are only interested in the big cities, country does not exist.

On the way to Cumnock we saw lots of roadside Animal Art, a local competition run to be a tourist feature.
Below are a few examples:

Today we just spent looking around Cumnock, Gerri went for walk, Kym a short 20km ride around the region.
Tomorrow, onto Mendooran, via Dubbo for LPG fuel, we think.

17/04/2013 Warri Camping Reserve, near Braidwood.

Our first night spent at Warri Camping Reserve a freecamp about 14km north of Braidwood. Got up the Clyde OK with all the extra weight of an extra 80lts of water (on top of the 60 we already had) ,  40lts of fresh tank water (drinking) in a water tube I put on the back plus the 2 x 20lts in drums. Also have an extra 100AmpHr battery and 2 x 20lts of extra fuel. Gerri was worried about getting up but we cruised up at 40 odd kph and 2500rpm (max 5500) so plenty left.
Gerri’s daughter, Jackie, visited from Queanbeyan and stayed the night. Will stay here at least til Friday and maybe longer. we’ll see.

Left Warri Saturday, headed through Goulburn, Crookwell to Tuena.

23/04/2013 Carcoar Dam, near Blayney

Arrived here on Sunday 21 Apr @ free camp on  Carcoar Dam , previous night was a one nighter at Tuena where we experienced school holiday mode with kids, dogs & trail bikes, thus the 1 night. Yesterday Kym went for a 30km ride to Carcoar and Gerri walked around the dam area. We then went into Blayney for supplies. Lots of chatting to our neighbours and picking up travel stories & tips.

Today Kym went for a 25 km ride to Barry and Gerri met a lady today who has been on the road for 15 years and is in a tiny van with 2 dog, good on her.

Tomorrow we head off to we are not sure yet, stay tuned.
